About 900-1000 species of annual or perennial herbs with succulent stems. Widely distributed in Asia, Africa, and North America. Impatiens (impatient) and "touch-me-not" refer to the seed dispersal mechanism in which the seed pods "explode" when touched, throwing the seeds.
